Throughout history, literature, and pop culture, blackbirds have a well-deserved reputation for truth-telling. Often unfairly maligned as harbingers of death or bad luck, blackbirds tend to tell it like it is—not just what you want to hear, but need to hear.

Consider The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. The raven repeats “Nevermore”—a refrain that makes it impossible for the speaker to ignore the finality of Lenore’s death. And while a painful truth like this is hard to accept—it is, in fact, the truth. And the sooner one accepts a painful truth like this, the sooner one can begin to process their grief and start healing.

(Not to say that’s what the speaker does in the poem, or what Poe did in his life, generally—but you get the idea.)

The raven is also associated with Apollo, the Greek God of prophecy and oracles. According to myth, Apollo sent a white raven—or white crow, in some versions—to spy on his lover, Coronis. When the raven/crow returned, he broke the news to Apollo that Coronis had been unfaithful. Unfortunately, the poor bird was punished for his honesty when, in a fit of rage, Apollo scorched the bird and turned his feathers black. All ravens and crows have been black ever since.

Inspired by the blackbird’s penchant for telling it like it is—and following the cartomancy method designed by late 18th- /early 19th-century French fortune teller Marie-Anne Adélaïde Lenormand—the Blackbird Lenormand deck takes a practical approach to answering questions about everyday life. It won’t always tell you what you want to hear, but it may just tell you what you need to hear. And you’ll be better off for it.

Use this deck on its own—or combine it with your tarot readings—to gain insight on practical matters and determine your best path forward.
